Photography workshop f3: France, Loire valley castles

Numerous châteaux line the banks of the Loire River, throughout the "Valley of the Kings," a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The oldest, built for defensive purposes, were veritable medieval fortresses with their ramparts and drawbridges. During the Renaissance, aesthetics inspired by Italian culture became more important to the Kingdom's dignitaries. The refined facades were complemented by the beauty of the gardens surrounding the buildings. We will visit the most famous of these, including the imposing Château de Chenonceau with its arches overlooking the Cher and its magnificent gardens, or the Château de Chambord, remarkable for its size and richly decorated facades, famous in particular for its double spiral staircase designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Finally, the Château de Blois, whose construction lasted nearly four centuries, and whose architecture combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Classical styles.
